Lewis Excellence Award
Nannette Newsome, RN in Carteret General Hospital’s Day Surgery Department in Surgical Services received the Lewis Excellence Award May 9, 2008. Named in honor of Georgia Lewis, RN, the award recognizes the impact and importance of nursing on patient care.
Mrs. Newsome was one of many individuals nominated from hundreds of nurses and LPNs at Carteret General. “She was selected because of her compassion and expert skills. She is one of our special nurses who help make Carteret General great.” says Tonya Fluellen, Assistant VP Patient Care Services.
Phyllis Renfrow, Director of Surgical Services, elaborates, “She accomplishes jobs before others even recognize the need. She not only tackles tasks single handedly she cheerfully engages others assistance as appropriate. We have had many patients that request her to care for them, especially to have their IV’s started. Patients have even gone so far as to ask what day she is working as they desire to have their elective procedures done when she is here. She immediately sees to the patients needs without procrastinating.”
Mrs. Newsome is also known to walk over to the Imaging Center to process the patients quicker when she knows the Day Surgery Nurses are adequately staffed. And on any given day, she willingly walks over to bring charts when they are needed, she also played a very active role in the hospital’s efforts to raise money for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Fun at the Beach Baskets endeavor.
As a recipient of the Lewis Nursing Excellence Award, Mrs. Newsome will receive an expense paid trip to a national nursing convention of her choice, her name will be submitted to the North Carolina Nursing 100, and $500 cash. She will also be challenged to continue to display excellence in nursing, act as a role model for nursing at Carteret General, and serve on the Recognition Committee for one year.
Carteret General Hospital recognizes nursing excellence twice per year in October for the Mildred Clapsadl Award and May for the Georgia Lewis Award. The Clapsadl & Lewis Nursing Excellence Awards are open to all clinical RNs and LPNs at Carteret General Hospital who have a minimum of three consecutive years of employment at Carteret General and a minimum of 1000 hours worked each of these years.
Nominations for Excellence Awards may be submitted by letter describing how the individual demonstrates excellence in nursing and are due 30 days prior to the announced presentation date. Nominations forms are also available at Carteret General Hospital.
