Awards and Recognition
Lewis Excellence Award
Julie Garner, RN of Carteret General Hospital’s Second Medical Department received the Lewis Excellence Award May 6, 2009. Named in honor of Georgia Lewis, RN, the award recognizes the impact and importance of nursing on patient care.
Ms. Garner was one of many individuals nominated from hundreds of nurses and LPNs at Carteret General. “She was selected because of her compassion, willingness to go the extra mile and expert skills. Julie is an inspiration to others. As a charge nurse and a peer, she insists on high quality care from her Second Medical team. She is one of our special nurses who help make Carteret General great.” says Donna Cheek, VP Patient Care Services.
Cynthia Rose, Clinical Director of 2nd Medical, elaborates, “Julie serves most of her time as charge nurse, running the unit very smoothly. She ensures quality patient care is performed and never has to be asked to help out. Julie also serves as a coach to help staff know they can get through anything.”
Ms. Garner is also known to be kind, thorough and dedicated. Co-workers emphasized that Ms. Garner is proactive and always anticipates the needs of patients. She “takes extra time to make sure patients feel safe and cared about by making sure the family understands the progress of patient care and testing.” She strives to ensure that a holistic plan of care is followed and insists on high quality care from her team. Team members also noted that Ms. Garner routinely asks “What can I do to help” and assists all team members in the care of patients, no matter what is needed.
As a recipient of the Lewis Nursing Excellence Award, Ms. Garner will receive an expense paid trip to a national nursing convention of her choice, her name will be submitted to the North Carolina Nursing 100, and $500 cash. She will also be challenged to continue to display excellence in nursing, act as a role model for nursing at Carteret General, and serve on the Recognition Committee for one year.
Carteret General Hospital recognizes nursing excellence twice per year in October for the Mildred Clapsadl Award and May for the Georgia Lewis Award. The Clapsadl & Lewis Nursing Excellence Awards are open to all clinical RNs and LPNs at Carteret General Hospital who have a minimum of three consecutive years of employment at Carteret General and a minimum of 1000 hours worked each of these years.
Nominations for Excellence Awards may be submitted by letter describing how the individual demonstrates excellence in nursing and are due 30 days prior to the announced presentation date. Nominations forms are also available at Carteret General Hospital.
